David Crandall is an estate planning attorney who practices in the Kansas City Metropolitan areas of Kansas and Missouri. In 2008, he dramatically changed his practice in order to serve his clients better and assure that they get what they expect out of a will or trust. His tagline, prominently showcased on his website, is “We Do Estate Planning Differently.”
David also works with remote paralegals who need to be able to pick up a case and all tasks pertaining to the case easily. After looking at all the options, he found that MyCase’s usability and client-friendliness helped him accomplish both of these goals.
We wanted to hear why he chose MyCase and how the solution enables him to manage his practice in a client-oriented way. The following is our interview with him in his own words.
A Bit of Backstory
Throughout my career in law, attorneys around me thought of estate planning as just getting documents signed and getting it done quickly. When I took over an estate planning practice in 2006, they were doing just that. The estate planning process was very document centered and simplistic. After meeting with a client for an hour, signing some documents and sending them home, they wouldn’t communicate again.
This way of practicing was what I saw everyone doing, but I also saw that these estate plans were failing. Even though they were trust-based estate plans, many of them were still winding up in probate court. That’s not what the clients expected and the families weren’t happy with that. I didn't have any great answers as to why that was happening.
I decided that if I want things to work out for my clients, I need to start doing something different. In May of 2008, I radically changed the way I do estate planning. I now spend about 13 hours with each client doing extensive design work for them, and then outside of those 13 hours, I create an estate plan based off the work we’ve done together. It's more personalized, they feel a lot more comfortable with it, and I do ongoing maintenance to make sure that the plan stays up to date. The clients that have come in to do that kind of planning are really happy with it. I love working with them. I won’t go back and I can’t go back. I know that this is the right thing to do for them.
When I use the client portal, my clients will say that they’ve never seen anything like it before… they recognize that MyCase is something unique.
Why does MyCase matter to your practice?
One of the things I provide as an estate planning attorney is comfort. It’s not really about the documents, it’s about having the peace of mind of knowing your plan is effective and it’s going to work the way you want it to. I think of MyCase that way. It helps me keep top of mind all of the things that I’m working on so that I don’t have to wake up in the middle of the night and wonder if I’ve missed something.
It would be difficult to run my practice without MyCase, and a lot of things wouldn’t get done. Tasks like sharing documents with clients get done faster. When I use the client portal, my clients will say that they’ve never seen anything like it before. In any other law firm they’ve worked with, there is no online collaboration, so they recognize that MyCase is something unique. It promotes me as someone who is technology forward and adopting technology to use for my client’s benefit.
How do your clients react to the client portal?
Many of my clients do online banking all the time. It doesn’t matter when the bank is open or closed. they can always interact with them. In a similar fashion, with MyCase, they can communicate with their attorney, at their convenience, on their computer, 24/7.
MyCase helps me keep top of mind all of the things that I’m working on so that I don’t have to wake up in the middle of the night and wonder if I’ve missed something.
Why did you choose MyCase?
One of the reasons I went with MyCase is because the interface is very user-friendly and simple to use. The other softwares I considered were so complicated. I was concerned that not only would it take me a lot of time to get work done, but that none of my staff would be able to use it. I work with remote paralegals, so they need to be able to pick up a case and all the tasks involved quickly. That’s the thing I appreciate most about MyCase– there’s a lot of attention to the user-friendliness of the interaction.
I used to be a network administrator. I built computers and installed networks, set up servers, and I know a lot about the technical side of things. Considering the options that are out there right now, MyCase is the best. It’s the cleanest and easiest to use.
