Leadership Team

MyCase was founded by a team of legal and technology experts with proven backgrounds in creating revolutionary software that businesses love to use. In October 2012, MyCase was acquired by AppFolio, creator of easy-to-use, web-based software that helps small and mid-sized businesses more effectively market, manage and grow their business throughout the US.

Brian Donahoo, President and CEO

Brian Donahoo

The buck stops with Brian. He is a hands-on CEO and really enjoys building teams and growing a successful company. When he isn’t working you’ll find him running in a marathon, stand-up paddling or mountain biking in Santa Barbara.

Brian was the Sr. Vice President for Products and Services at Expertcity/CitrixOnline from 1999 to 2007. He was part of the original team, growing the company from early startup to $240 million in annual revenue. He led the planning and launch of GoToMyPC, GoToAssist, GoToMeeting, and GoToWebinar and these successful SaaS products are now used by millions of people around the world. Prior to joining Expertcity/Citrix Online, Brian held senior positions at Stream International and Viacom/Blockbuster.

Klaus Schauser, Chief Strategist and Founder

Klaus is one of the original founders of AppFolio and brings his enthusiasm, leadership and experience to the team. When he’s not sharing his vision, validating new product offers or setting the strategy you can find him outdoors hiking or stand-up paddleboarding, enjoying the beauty of Santa Barbara.

Klaus was the Founder and CTO of Expertcity/CitrixOnline from 1999 through 2006 and was the visionary behind GoToMyPC, GoToAssist, and GoToMeeting. He led the teams responsible for building the products and their secure, reliable Software as a Service (SaaS) infrastructure. As a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Klaus is a widely published research scientist with extensive experience developing scalable, highly parallel computing environments. Klaus holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley and has received numerous academic awards.

Jon Walker, CTO and Founder

Jon is one of the original founders of AppFolio and is responsible for technology and engineering. He is an entrepreneur at heart and is passionate about building and leading great engineering teams. He is a competitor off the computer as well. He played basketball in college and still finds time to play in his free time.

Prior to AppFolio, Jon was the CTO of Versora (sold to Kaseya in 2006), providers of open source Windows to Linux migration software. Before working at Versora, Jon was the CTO for Miramar Systems (sold to Computer Associates in 2004) where he led the development and quality assurance teams. The software developed under his direction has been deployed to over 20 million computers worldwide. Jon has also been a senior technologist for Nortel Networks and Xing Technology Inc. (sold to Real Networks), a Contributing Editor to LinuxWorld Magazine and he is the inventor of multiple patents. Jon also teaches Software Engineering as an adjunct professor at Westmont College in the Computer Science department.

Jason Randall, GM

Jason leads the MyCase team, setting the strategic direction and vision of the company. Accountable for all functions of the MyCase business unit, Jason keeps the team focused on driving fast growth and adding even more extremely happy MyCase customers.

Jason was previously the VP Product Management for AppFolio Property Manager, leading the product and market strategy for our web-based property management software through years of rapid growth. From 2003-2008 Jason was the Senior Director of Product Management at Expertcity/Citrix Online where he was responsible for managing the product lifecycle, strategy and positioning for Citrix Online's Software as a Service (SaaS) access and collaboration solutions. He led the product team during fifteen major existing product releases, and oversaw go-to-market planning for all new product initiatives. Prior to this role, Jason was the Director of Product Development at SupplySolution, Inc. where he was instrumental in developing and launching the company's web-based supply chain management service. After hours, Jason brews his own beer (he drinks it too) and is passionate about technology.

Matt Spiegel, Founder and VP, Product Management

Matt is responsible for defining the product strategy for MyCase. He works tirelessly to uncover the business problems that MyCase’s products will one day solve. An acute listener and a smart strategist, Matt is also a successful trial lawyer and uses his firsthand legal experience to ensure that MyCase meets the industry’s needs.

Matt worked as a criminal defense attorney at San Diego's largest consumer law firm for four years before starting his own practice in 2009. He was also the recipient of the 2007 San Diego Daily Transcript's "Top Young Attorney" award and selected as one of the Fastcase 50. After gaining experience managing a successful and growing private practice, Matt (along with co-founders Alex Dikowski and Chris Schulte) founded MyCase in 2010. He then spent several years building an extremely happy customer base before MyCase was acquired by AppFolio in 2012. In addition to being competitive in the courtroom, Matt enjoys rock climbing, golf and intense games of tennis.

Damon Valenzona, Director of Engineering

Damon heads up the engineering team at MyCase, focused on developing new features and continuously enhancing the software. His team also ensures the highest level of security and availability for MyCase customers.

Before joining the MyCase team, Damon worked at AppFolio on the SecureDocs product as a Software Engineer where he was responsible for the development, availability and security of the software. He earned a Masters in Computer Science from University of California, Santa Barbara and spends his spare time marathoning around the country.

Sarah Bottorff, Director of Marketing

Sarah leads the rock star MyCase marketing team that focuses on building brand awareness, lead generation and customer acquisition. Her team is responsible for creating an amazing journey from initial contact through the onboarding experience.

Sarah brings ten years of digital marketing experience to MyCase. She was most recently with a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson where she spearheaded the company’s shift to digital. Prior to that, she held multiple roles within Conversant Media, including heading up Media Services and Client Development. When not online (which is rare), Sarah enjoys traveling and seeking out new adventures.

Nicole Black, Director of Business Development and Community Relations

Nicole uses her legal expertise and her extensive experience and connections in the legal technology industry to create new opportunities for MyCase. She also tracks changes in the legal technology space, identifies trends, and applies this knowledge when writing for MyCase and other legal publications.

Her legal career spans nearly two decades, beginning in the Monroe County Public Defender's Office. She has also been associated with Trevett, Cristo, Salzer, &Andolina, and Fiandach & Fiandach. She has extensive litigation experience, having handled over 3000 criminal and civil cases. She has conducted countless hearings and trials and has handled many appeals. She was named an inaugural ABA Legal Rebel in 2009 and an inaugural Fastcase 50 in 2011. She is also a well known legal technology author, journalist, and speaker. She wrote "Cloud Computing for Lawyers" (2012), and co-authors "Social Media: The Next Frontier" (2010), both published by the American Bar Association. She also co-authors "Criminal Law in New York," a Thomson West treatise. Nicole writes a weekly column for The Daily Record and has spoken at many conferences regarding the intersection of law, mobile computing, and Internet-based technology. When she's not thinking about legal technology, you can find her cooking or creating unique jewelry while enjoying a great glass of wine.
