JacobSapochnick_PresenterImageEvery month, when I interview our customers for this post, the innovation and enthusiasm that they exhibit regarding their law practices and career paths never ceases to amaze me. This month’s featured customer, Jacob Sapochnick, was no exception.

Growing a 21st-century law firm

When I asked Jacob how he ended up practicing immigration law in San Diego, it was evident from his reply that Jacob is not your typical lawyer, in more ways than one. “I’m originally from Israel and then came to the US to study law and get my LLM. Originally I wanted to get into international and IP law and but when I graduated I stumbled upon immigration law and opened up my own firm,” he replied. “When I started it was just me, but because of our efforts using social media in less than 7 years our practice grew quickly to 7 attorneys, including me. We have 8 paralegals now, as well.”

Jacob attributes the quick growth to his firm’s focus and creative use of 21st century technologies. He explains that by focusing on immigration law, his firm can represent people from across the country, thus greatly expanding his firm’s target client base: “One of the nicest things about practicing immigration law is that it’s a federal area and as a result, we can practice in all 50 states. It’s one of the unique areas of law where you can actually do that.”


Leveraging technology for better client service

His firm also leverages technology in a number of different ways, one of which is to reach potential customers and to interact with current customers. For starters, the firm uses social media to share information about immigration issues and connect with legal consumers hoping to learn more about immigration law: “We provide many ways for potential clients to reach us including via Facebook and Twitter. We’re proud to have one of the largest law firm Facebook pages in the world. It has over 106,000 fans. We use our Facebook page as a social tool–not just to sell our services but also to provide a valuable information source. Because of our social media success we consult with other lawyers about the effective use of social media and share the lessons we’ve learned at our blog, The Enchanting Lawyer, and at our newly launched podcast.”

From the very beginning, the firm has relied on the latest technology to streamline his clients’ experience. Jacob explains that cutting edge technology is key to providing the best client service: “We embraced technology from the start. We try to scan everything that we can and have a large scanner to scan all of our docs and store them online using MyCase. We’ve never had landline phones and have always used VOIP.”

Web-based access offers limitless possibilities

For Jacob, given the nature of his firm’s practice, a cloud-based practice was a no-brainer. “The future is the cloud, especially if you don’t want to be tied to one location.” He continues, “this is particularly true with international clientele who are in different time zones than you are. These clients want to be able to access documents on the go–24 hours a day, 7 days a week, day or night.”

According to Jacob, securely storing legal files in the cloud offers mobile lawyers a convenience that can’t be beat: “One of the best parts of cloud-based document storage is the ability to access docs from anywhere. For example, right now I’m traveling and if I want to access a file I can log  into the MyCase app and access all of my client files and documents. For our firm, the goal is to be completely in the cloud so our lawyers and staff can work from anywhere.”

MyCase makes it possible

For Jacob’s firm, MyCase was the perfect choice when it came to moving his firm to the cloud: “When we decided to use a web-based law practice management system, we tested out several of the leading software platforms. But we ultimately chose MyCase for a number of reasons, but the one that sold us was the simplicity of use. And, compared to the others, customer service was exemplary.”

But, as Jacob explains, MyCase is more than just an intuitive interface: “MyCase helps the entire firm to stay organized and as we grow it’s easy to add new people to the system. Another great feature of MyCase is that our can clients login whenever they’d like and instantaneously get the information they need. I also like that I can integrate my Gmail calendar to the MyCase calendar. And last but not least, the iPhone app is a huge selling point! It’s perfect and without that it would be nearly impossible for my firm to function.”

Looking toward the future

When asked what the future holds for his firm, Jacob explained that his goal is to continue using technology to grow the firm by meeting the expectations of 21st century legal consumers: “I hope to be able to completely transition to an online firm where we’re able to reach clients faster while simultaneously providing the best client service possible.”

But the innovation doesn’t stop there. He also plans to use technology to increase access to information for legal consumers. How is he going to do this? By developing mobile apps, of course!

In fact, his firm has already released two apps and according to Jacob, that’s just the start: “We’ve already created 2 dedicated apps for legal consumers. The first one teaches our clients how to prepare for an immigration marriage interview and the other  is designed for clients preparing for the citizenship test. It helps them to study for the test using the app. So we actually create technology within the firm to help our clients and we plan to do even more of this. That way we can  provide legal consumers with access to legal services in non-traditional ways.”

See what I mean about MyCase customers? They’re innovative and they never sit still. And Jacob is a perfect example of this. So it’s not surprising that when I asked him if he had a favorite quote, he replied: “You can’t fall if you don’t climb. But there’s no joy in living your whole life on the ground.”
