Get To Know:
Ke Zhang, Senior Software Engineer

familyWhat is your position with MyCase?

I’m a senior software engineer on the MyCase web operations team.

How did you end up working for MyCase?

I joined the web operations team of Appfolio, MyCase’s parent company, in March, 2012. Three months into my employment, I moved to MyCase as the first web operations engineer at a time when the entire division was in rapid growth.

What does your job entail?

Our team’s duty is to keep online. We are responsible for addressing any issues that affect the MyCase platform.

What is the most difficult part of your job?

Being on call and addressing issues that might arise–no matter what time, day or night!

What’s the best part of your job?

Waking up at 3 a.m. to address an issue that’s arisen and enjoying an out-of-ordinary working style.

Where are you originally from and how did you end up in Santa Barbara?

I grew up in China, and came to the United States to pursue my dream. I got my Ph.D in astronomy in 2007, but decided computing and coding is what I really want to do with my life; hence Appfolio and Santa Barbara.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like hiking and mountain climbing. I used to do them quite often–but that was before our first boy was born.

Do you have any unusual hobbies?

Probably not very unusual for engineers! I like to hack any piece of hardware with a chip in it: Wii, smart phones, PDAs (if you remember what they are), and GPS devices, to name a few.

Tell me about your family/pets, etc.?

Maggie and I have been married for 7 years. We have 3 boys, Han-Yang and Han-Shen, and their older feline brother Blackie.

Do you have a favorite saying or quote and if so, what is it and why?

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” – Leonardo da Vinci

I have always wanted and tried to live a simple life, but for a subject as complicated as life, simplicity can only be on the surface and it takes great effort to ‘hide’ the details. When I got into the software world, this principle was even more augmented. Our goal is for a piece of software to be self-explaining and easy to use. But to make it so, we have to work very hard to hide what’s underneath, from designing to implementation.
