ABA Techshow:
The 2020 Wrap Up

Another year, another ABA Techshow! It’s hard to believe that once again, Techshow has come and gone. Fun was had by all, and the conference flew by. There were lots of great CLE tracks, a bustling EXPO Hall, and many opportunities to connect with likeminded legal tech devotees, whether on or offsite.

It was a busy conference for the MyCase team. As always, the entire MyCase team had a great time connecting with attendees and customers, as you’ll see in the photos below.

But first, here’s what others had to say about this year’s Techshow (I’ll update this list as new posts are published):

Showcasing New Features

At MyCase we’ve been focused on helping law firms run strong, healthy businesses by delivering functionality and insights into the most critical business drivers. That’s why this year at Techshow we were incredibly excited to showcase a number of great new features at our booth.

These key updates, which we’ve been able to deliver as features that are native to MyCase, have focused on three main customer goals: capturing new business, managing cases, and getting paid.

Capturing new business

When we met with members of the media and other key industry influencers at our booth, we shared how we’re helping our customers to capture new leads, manage them through the lead lifecycle, and ultimately convert them to new business with these recently released features:

Case management

Because managing cases is the heart of any Practice Management solution, MyCase provides all the necessary tools to keep cases organized and on track for a successful outcome. In keeping with that objective, recently released case management features include:

Billing and invoicing

Whether it’s before, during, or after a case, the billing and invoicing process is critical to the cash flow of law firms. That’s why recently released features include:

Many of our new features showcase the advantages of an all-in-one platform. Because law firm data is stored natively within MyCase, we’re able to use that information to develop built-in tools that add value, like our Smart Time Finder and centralized communication features (2-way text messaging and Mailbox).

MyCase’s Visual Notes

Next up, our visual notes. As we have for many years now, we once again brought in visual notetaker Leah Silverman to capture many of the ABA Techshow sessions. Our visual notes have become fixture at ABA Techshow and are always appreciated by attendees, and this year was no different.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Last week I wrote a post that highlights all the visual notes taken at Techshow this year, and over the next few weeks I’ll be writing blog posts about each of the sessions recorded by visual notes, so make sure to check back for lots of great legal technology and law practice management tips and tricks gleaned from each of these sessions.

The Presentations

As mentioned above, MyCase’s Legal Technology Evangelist, Niki Black, spoke on 3 different occasions. Prior to Techshow, she presented at the 2020 Women in Legal Tech Summit, which occurred on Wednesday February 26th. During her talk, as she explains in her Above the Law column, she proposed the use of the hashtag #legaltechX2 as one way to amplify the voices of women in legal tech.

 

Then on Friday she spoke at 2 different Techshow sessions. First, she and Maria Phillips discussed ways to reduce cybersecurity risks to law firm systems and maintain data privacy, including how to avoid phishing lures and other attacks on devices used in your practice.

Then in the afternoon, she and Jim Calloway discussed the many benefits of cloud computing for law firms, along with the ethical rules regarding oversight during the initial vetting of cloud providers and due diligence in managing legal cloud computing software services.


The MyCase Customer Dinner

As we’ve done for a number of years, we once again held a customer dinner. Listening to customers is in our DNA, so we try to connect face-to-face with our customers whenever we can. That’s why on Thursday night we hosted a dinner with MyCase customers from a number of different firms. We learned all about their law firms and how they use MyCase to provide responsive client service and run more efficient practices. They also provides lots of insightful feedback that we’ll be taking back to our product development teams.

Additionally, as in prior years, we also had a number of customer visits scheduled, where members of our team planned to head out to the offices of our customers and learn about the ins and outs of managing their law firms. Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside of our control, including the winter travel advisories and delayed flights, we had to cancel the visits. But we’ll be sure to reschedule them next year!

Of course we continued our popular tradition of offering donuts at our booth each morning, and once again we offered a coffee cart as well. Throughout the morning on Thursday we offered attendees free lattes, cappuccinos, coffee, and more! And of course there were free donuts from Chicago’s very own Stan’s Donuts to go with the coffee:

And last, but not least, we continued the longstanding tradition of hosting a Happy Hour at our booth on Thursday afternoon. We served local craft beer, and lots of people stopped by. One attendee stopped by to enjoy a beer and take home another one of our MyCase beer cups, which he’s adding to his collection since he reminded us that they work great for milkshakes as well as beer. Needless to say, fun was had by all!
