Get To Know:
Chad Shaffer, Senior Software Engineer

chad-sWhat is your position with MyCase?

Senior Software Engineer

How did you end up working for MyCase?

I worked for Qualcomm across the street from the old office, so when I saw that AppFolio was rated one of the best places to work on Glassdoor and that they were hiring, I decided to apply.  I was so impressed by everyone I met during the interview process it was a no brainer for me to join MyCase.

What does your job entail?

I work on the architecture team. One of our main goals is to ensure the long term success of MyCase even as our customer base dramatically increases in size.  This means re-architecting parts of our application and splitting out microservices so MyCase can scale to meet demand. We do this by refactoring existing features so they can be extended more easily, and keeping up with maintaining our dependencies, among many other things.

What is the most difficult part of your job?

Working on the architecture team is like replacing large, important parts of the engine of a car as it’s driving on the freeway.  We have to make sure we have laser focus, an almost obsessive level of attention to detail, and contingency plans for everything.

What’s the best part of your job?

I am consistently impressed and inspired by all of my colleagues at MyCase. We foster a strong culture here and it attracts highly motivated, intelligent, and interesting people that I can’t wait to work with every day.

Where are you originally from and how did you end up in San Diego?

I grew up in Rialto, California (near San Bernardino), out of college I took a year “off” working at a sports store, playing in a band, and snowboarding.  After that I threw my resume on the Internet and took the first job offer I got, from a defense contractor in San Diego.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy hanging with my family, playing guitar, trying new craft beers, reading classic literature, going to baseball and hockey games, and watching standup comedy.

What would be your ideal vacation?

A two parter: a snowboarding and sightseeing trip to the Alps, followed by a stop at an all inclusive beach resort on the way home.

Tell me about your family/pets, etc.?

My wife Dana and I are the proud parents of our two year old daughter Evelyn.  We’re expecting twins (a boy and a girl) in April 2017.  We also live with our dog Ellie and cat Spencer.

What’s one of your favorite books and why?

The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky is beautifully written, complex, enlightening, and enthralling all at the same time.

Do you have a favorite saying or quote and if so, what is it and why?

It’s not all that wise or inspiring, but I’m always telling myself and the people around me, “Let’s not talk about it, let’s be about it!” It’s always very tongue-in-cheek, but it motivates me to stay outside of my comfort zone and keep a light heart about things in general; it also usually elicits a groan from anyone within earshot, which makes me smile.
