Get To Know:
Chad Sands, Content Marketing Manager

What is your position with MyCase?

Content Marketing Manager.

How did you end up working for MyCase?

I knew some people from a previous company who were at AppFolio and MyCase and I reached out to see if there might be any opportunities in marketing. I ended up interviewing at MyCase and from the start seemed like a great fit for me. I was lucky enough to get an offer — and I took it!

What does your job entail?

I like to describe myself as a “digital Leatherman” in the sense that I’m not really good at one thing, but pretty good at doing a lot of different things. I do a little bit of creative and design work on stuff like landing pages and banners, work with our digital agency on our social media, SEO and PPC campaigns, as well as work with our Sales Development team. There is also content creation which involves a little bit of blog writing each month, plus some work on infographics and we did our first podcast in January. We are also trying to focus on creating more content around video, so that is another area I’ve been focusing on more and more. So, I’m a bit all over the place but that’s one of the reasons I love it so much! Every week I’m working on something new.

What is the most difficult part of your job?

I’d say the most difficult part of my job is that we’re a small marketing team but need to produce a lot of valuable content for our customers. Sometimes I feel the world is in content overload and inbox overflow, and I’m definitely a fan of quality over quantity, so it’s about finding that balance of producing really great content that will stand the test of time versus constantly pushing out content because that’s what everybody else is doing.

What’s the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is I get to work and collaborate with so many different people. Whether it’s brainstorming ideas for campaigns, or working with the agency lead and going through performance in terms of what’s working/not working, or producing videos — at the end of the day I just want to look back and say, “You know, we did some cool stuff that resonated with our customers.” If I can look back 5 years down the road and say that, then I’ll be happy. Being a part of the AppFolio family is also great. I know every tech company thinks they are the best place in the world to work at, but life at MyCase is pretty good.

Where are you originally from and how did you end up in Santa Barbara?

I am originally from Seattle area and was at Santa Barbara City College for a little bit before transferring to U.S.C. School of Cinema-Television. My wife is from the Santa Barbara area and after living in L.A. for about five years, wanted to move back. I couldn’t blame her and so we moved back almost ten years ago and have been here ever since. I like to call Santa Barbara the Bermuda Triangle of the West: a lot of people think they’ll be just passing through and end up staying forever.

Tell me about your family/pets, etc.?

Our cat Henry (or Hen or Henster) is from Animal Shelter Assistance Program here in Santa Barbara. He was found behind a Trader Joe’s and was so sick when he first arrived at the shelter he had to be quarantined off by himself for weeks! They told us he was pretty sick (he even has his own asthma inhaler!) and was really shy, so I wasn’t convinced we should rescue him, but my wife went back the next day and got him without telling me–and now I hate leaving him alone even for a weekend! He lost some teeth in an accident a few years ago, so his tongue likes to hang out on its own. He’s pretty much my spirit animal.

What would the perfect day be like for you? What would you do and who would you spend it with?

Somewhere warm, by a pool or ocean, with my wife and good friends, food and drinks. That sounds a little bit like living in Santa Barbara 🙂

Do you have any unusual hobbies?

Not really, but I play tennis. My most unusual hobby is probably falling asleep watching replays of tennis matches. Remember in “The Big Lebowski” when Lebowski was lying on his rug (that tied the room together), just listening to the audio of a bowling alley? That’s like me, but with tennis. Come to think of it, my perfect day would probably involve tennis at some point.

If you could travel anywhere you’ve not yet been, where would you go?

Tahiti, Maldives or Fiji-somewhere tropical with one of those long wooden docks leading to a bungalow over the ocean. I could spend a few months there.

Do you have a favorite saying or quote and if so, what is it and why?

“Forget it Jake, it’s Chinatown.” Probably my favorite movie of all time. That line has a lot of different meanings and if you ask me, is the best ending in film.
