“If you build it, they will come.”
In the classic film “Field of Dreams,” these words were whispered down from the heavens and inspired Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella to plow his corn fields and build a baseball diamond.
However, as attorney and rainmaking coach Jaimie Field explained at the start of yesterday’s webinar “A Blueprint for Rainmaking Success,” small firm lawyers should be a little more cautious when it comes to the business of law — just because you build it, doesn’t mean clients will come.
Instead of buying into what she calls “The Field of Dreams Method of Marketing,” Jaimie explained that to become a true rainmaker, attorneys need to learn how to create relationships and must have a clear concept of what they consider to be “success.”
So, what exactly is rainmaking success? Well, if you’re not sure, you’re not alone. In the first poll taken during the webinar, over 40% of attendees said they didn’t even know what a rainmaking plan was, let alone if it would help them be successful. Good thing they were attending our online presentation because the truth is–creating a strong rainmaking plan will almost certainly have a positive effect on your practice.
“It forces you to clarify your goals,” Jaimie explained. “Once you have the goals written down, you can actually act upon them.” In fact, by simply just writing down your goals, you are 42% more likely to be successful. And by sharing those goals with a friend or mentor your likelihood of success will increase to 78%! I’m not a statistician, but if those numbers alone don’t inspire you to put a rainmaking plan to paper, I’m not sure what will!
