Sometimes, when you run a busy solo or small law firm, it seems like there’s never enough time in the day to get everything done. Running a law practice can be incredibly time consuming, especially when you’re the one responsible for managing everything that makes a law practice successful, from accounting and marketing, to choosing the right software and, of course, representing clients. Your task list can often seem overwhelming, making it difficult to balance the demands of your law practice with the rest of your life.
That’s why finding the right balance between work and the rest of your life made our list of “the top 15 ways to become the happy lawyer you were meant to be.” This 15-part blog series is meant to help lawyers take steps to reduce stress and increase their job satisfaction. One way to increase your overall satisfaction with your life, both at work and at home, is to find a way to better balance your professional and personal lives. Taking steps to modernize your law practice is a step in the right direction toward the goal of better work/life balance.
So what steps should you consider taking to modernize your practice? The results of our latest survey should help you in making this decision. In December we surveyed solo and small firm attorneys with an eye toward better understanding their priorities and challenges in the upcoming year. We asked them to share with us the steps they would be taking to modernize their firms in 2015.
From the nearly 800 responses that we received, it was clear that many solo and small firm lawyers shared the same technology goals for their practices. Here are a few of our findings and you can learn more about the survey results in the infographic below.
First, we learned that the biggest focus for the survey respondents in 2015 was their law firm’s website, with 49% indicating that revamping their website was a top priority. Another top priority for solo and small firm lawyers in 2015 was to reduce paper, with 47% reporting that they planned to move to a paperless office this year.
25% of lawyers surveyed reported that investing in practice management software for the firm was a top priority. And for another 25% of those surveyed, cloud computing was an important step toward modernizing their law firm in 2015.
By modernizing your law firm, you save your law firm time and money. There’s no reason to run your law firm as if it were still 1995. The Internet and online tools have revolutionized the way that business is being conducted. Smart lawyers understand the realities of practicing law in the 21st century and the benefits of taking advantage of the latest technologies. By doing so, you’re able to run your law practice more efficiently, allowing you more time to better enjoy your life both in and out of the office.
