jasonWhat is your position with MyCase?

I am the Executive Vice President.

How did you become involved in MyCase and what was your position at AppFolio at the time that MyCase was acquired?

At the time of the acquisition, I was the VP of Product and UX for AppFolio. Part of my responsibility was to help evaluate potential acquisitions, especially as they pertained to realizing our vision of expanding into new vertical industries. After the acquisition, I stayed very close to the team in an effort to make sure we had a smooth transition as well as plans to move forward with our intended growth and investment in the business. In 2014, I transitioned full time into the MyCase business and became the Executive Vice President.

What does your job entail?

I have a great job! My primary focus is making sure we have a great product and service for our customers, so we can live up to the trust they have placed in us. I do that by helping to find the best people possible for our team, and then making sure they have the resources, clarity, and freedom to excel in making our customers’ lives easier and more efficient.

What is the most difficult part of your job?

The most difficult part of my job is not always being able to move as fast as I would like to. We have a big vision for the future of MyCase, with plans to continue implementing key features and services that will bring tremendous value to law firms. We will be here for the long term, and I am anxious and excited to build on what we have already accomplished.

What’s the best part of your job?

By far the best part of my job is seeing the impact we are having on our customers’ lives. We have a “Customer Love” wall in our office, and it is always a big boost for me to walk by it and read the latest messages where our customers talk about how impactful MyCase has been for them. It’s a great way for us to celebrate the difference we are making in their law practices.

Where are you originally from and how did you end up in Santa Barbara?

I’m originally from Santa Clarita, which is a town just north of Los Angeles. I went to school at UCSB. My wife (girlfriend at the time) was due to graduate a couple of years after me, and I was fortunate enough to find a job in Santa Barbara while she finished school. Once she graduated, we decided to stay in Santa Barbara. Many years later we are still here and love it!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I like to spend time with my family. We bought a book that lists around 60 hiking trails in the Santa Barbara area, and we have a goal to try to tackle them all in the next two years. We are off to a great start so far in 2015! I also have been a home brewer since college, and continue to brew a new batch of beer every month or so.

Tell me about your family/pets, etc.?

I have three girls (14, 11, 7). We are always busy with some activity. As if we weren’t doing enough, we recently got a new dog to join our existing one and are now back to puppy training.

Do you have a favorite saying or quote and if so, what is it and why?

I really enjoy working on business and product strategy. One of my favorite sayings is about focus, and relates how a good strategy is less about what you are going do to, and more about what you are not going to do. I think everyone here at MyCase is probably tired of hearing it, but it relates to every area of our business. For example, we pride ourselves on having a simple, easy to use product. Building a product that is known for ease of use is more about all the things that get left out than the features that actually make it in. That’s why we are always focused on enhancing MyCase, but, even more importantly, we are committed to doing it right.
